Middle Eastern Smiley  I  Hila Cohen

The smiley we all know gets a local twist by using the Arab letter ‘Ta’, thus creating a combination of a typographic symbol (icon) and a social message.

In Jaffa, the Arabic language appears everywhere, creating the opportunity to experience daily the beauty and aesthetic in it. As a resident of the city, the artist saw an opportunity to create a smile in an unpredictable place, to create positive communication without using words. The Middle Eastern smiley is on constant display on a wall at the Democratic School in Jaffa, as well as on several clothing items that help spread its message - boundless positivity.
